Physical Education Teachers promote health and fitness through planned activities, quality teaching, and dissemination of up-to-date information related to wellness, organized play, and recreation. This position reports to the Director of Student Services.

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities

Teach weekly or biweekly physical education classes to a wide range of TLC students, grades preschool through high school.

Promote health and wellness education through planned activities and the dissemination of information that correlates to the MA Health Curriculum Frameworks.

Teach all classes through American Sign Language to ensure full accessibility to the curriculum.

Encourage student participation in personal health and fitness activities.

Collaborate with classroom teachers and occupational/physical therapists to maximize student skill development.

Adapt and modify physical education lessons for special needs learners as needed.

Provide support with after school activities, sports, intramural and athletic activities on campus.

Assist in the development of policies and procedures to ensure well-coordinated and safe physical education programming and ensure the implementation of those procedures.

Maintain equipment inventory and supplies for physical education classes.

Work collaboratively with TLC colleagues to facilitate the integration of students’ educational, social, recreational and leisure time activities.

Qualifications/Requirements

– Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education or related area of study
– Familiarity with Massachusetts Health Curriculum Frameworks
– MA teacher license or able to become licensed as a MA educator
– Able to work as part of a team
– A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
– Ability to modify the curriculum for different learners and ability levels
– Demonstrated commitment to student health and wellness
– Familiarity with Deaf culture and Deaf sports preferred
– Experience working with students of different age groups
– Skills and knowledge to lead Adaptive Physical Education classes
