The Residential Care Worker assists in the developing, implementing, and monitoring of individual and group treatment plans and procedures during program hours that result in improved adaptive social/interpersonal functioning and high rates of successful program completing among youngsters in assigned group. The Residential Care Worker resides with assigned youth according to a variable pattern, required by program’s schedule.

1. Building Positive Relationships with Youth

To build and maintain positive relationships with youth, the Teacher/Counselor (1) conveys a genuine interest and concern for youth in their care (2) develops rapport, listens, and engages youth in daily interaction (3) participates with youth in recreational and other daily activities (4) is available and approachable to youth (5) observes and attends to youths’ needs (6) demonstrates flexibility, fairness and consistency in setting rules and guidelines.

2. Safety & Well-being

To assure that each young person’s health, safety and well-being is guaranteed, the Teacher/Counselor will (1) provide direct supervision of youth as required by individual, program and/or regulatory requirements (2) respond to and communicate routine and emergency health care issues to necessary treatment team members (3) assess and respond to dangerous situations and conditions per organization policies and program expectations (4) consider the youths’ emotional, psychological and physical well being when engaging in activities or interventions. The Teacher/Counselor is responsible to monitor and document youth in self administering medication and ensure dosage timelines are met.

3. Group/Milieu Management

To assure attention to the importance of groups and utilization of group management techniques, the Teacher/Counselor will: (1) manage conflict and facilitate group and individual problem-solving (2) assess and respond to group behavior and dynamics (3) Effectively use group process as opportunities to teach community living skills (4) Plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of daily living routines and activities, including structuring the environment and managing group transitions.

4. Treatment Planning

To assure the treatment needs are met, the Teacher/Counselor will (1) participate and collaborate with treatment team members in goal development (2) conduct formal and informal functional behavioral assessments (3) identify and build upon child’s strengths (4) implement treatment interventions as it relates to a child’s individual service plan (5) teach and role model pro-social behaviors (6) evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions and provide feedback (7) provide ongoing advocacy and support for children(8) participate in clinical supervision and implement clinical recommendations as determined in clinical supervision.

5. Therapeutic and Educational Activities

To assure goal focused therapeutic and educational activities for all youth within the program the Teacher/Counselor will (1) facilitate Short Range (Daily, Weekly) and Long Range (Monthly, Yearly) planning of activities (2) implement planned activities connecting them to the individual and group treatment goals (3) ensure evaluation occurs for each individual activity and overall evaluation of the plan.

6. Professional Development and Training

To assure consistent and continuous professional development and training, the Teacher/Counselor will (1) complete all training requirements as identified (2) participate in ongoing professional development in-service trainings (3) participate in clinical supervision; (4) complete the minimum number of annual professional development training hours in accordance with regulatory guidelines (5) achieve professional development goals as identified in performance evaluations.

7. Documentation and Record keeping

To assure proper documentation and record keeping the Teacher/Counselor will (1) complete all required paperwork (2) complete written work that is legible, accurate and uses professional language (3) meet timelines for submitting paperwork established by the program and organization. (4) use written documentation to communicate effectively with peers, subordinates and supervisors.
