The Department of Liberal Studies (DLS) in Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf invites applications for a lecturer position starting August 2023. Applicants should be fluent in both American Sign Language and written English.

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

• Teach Deaf Cultural Studies courses
• Participate fully in the department’s curricular initiatives and related faculty duties
• Participate in antiracism, diversity and inclusion development activities
• Attend professional development activities
• Participate in communication development activities
• Serve the department, institute and the community

Qualifications/Requirements:

Required Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in field related to Deaf Studies
• Demonstrated teaching experience on the collegiate level
• Ability to teach a variety of Deaf, Hard of Hearing and hearing students who may utilize a variety of communication and learning modalities
• Currency in the field of Deaf Studies • Proficiency in American Sign Language
• Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
• Required Minimum Education Level MS, MA

Department/College Description

NTID, one of the nine colleges of RIT, is the world’s largest technological college serving deaf and hard of hearing students. Created by Congress and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, it represents the world’s first effort to educate large numbers of deaf students within a college campus planned primarily for hearing students. Together with 15,000 full and part-time students, over 1,300 college-age deaf students from all 50 states and abroad study and reside on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

DLS provides English, humanities, and social science courses to 1,150 deaf and hard-of-hearing students with varied levels of reading and writing preparation. We host an associate degree program in Applied Liberal Arts and a bachelor’s degree program in Community Development and Inclusive Leadership. The department also serves deaf students enrolled in associate degree programs at NTID, and both hearing and deaf students enrolled in baccalaureate degree programs through agreements with the College of Liberal Arts at RIT. Our department welcomes talented candidates who will provide inclusive and culturally responsive experiences for our domestic and international students using American Sign Language. The successful applicant will be creative, team-oriented, and eager to contribute to the growth of our curriculum and to the success of our students.
